OCT Scans: Are They Worth It?

Eye Care
When it comes to looking after your eyes, a regular eye exam is an important part of keeping your vision and eye health on track. At The Eye Place, we combine our clinical expertise with advanced technology to build a clearer picture of your eyes. One of our most valuable tools is OCT, which gives us a detailed view of what is happening beneath the surface of your eyes.
What is an OCT?
An OCT scan uses light waves to create highly detailed, cross sectional images of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue lining the inside of the eye. It allows our optometrists to see beneath the surface of the retina and examine its different layers in much greater detail than a standard eye exam alone.
OCT can also be used to assess the optic nerve, which carries signals from the retina to the brain. It can help identify changes to the nerve fibres associated with health concerns that can affect the optic nerve.
Why is an OCT Worth Having?
It gives us a closer look at your eye health
An OCT allows us to see structures that can’t be viewed in the same level of detail during a standard eye exam. This can help our optometrists identify subtle changes within the eye and build a more comprehensive picture of your overall eye health.
It can help detect changes earlier
Some eye conditions can develop gradually without noticeable changes to your vision in the early stages. OCT imaging can help our optometrists spot changes in the retina and optic nerve that may otherwise be difficult to detect.
An OCT can spot eye conditions such as glaucoma, age related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease.
Spotting changes early can allow your optometrist to monitor them closely and, where appropriate, recommend further investigation or treatment.
We can monitor your eyes over time
One of the biggest benefits of OCT technology is that we can compare your scans over time. Having detailed images to refer back to allows our optometrists to monitor your eyes for changes and identify any developments that may need further investigation.
Your eyes are constantly changing, so having a record of what is normal for you can be incredibly useful.
Investing in Your Eye Health
Your vision can feel perfectly normal even when changes are beginning to develop inside your eyes. This is why regular eye exams are so important, and why additional technology such as OCT can be such a valuable part of your eye care.
At The Eye Place, we combine clinical care with advanced technology to give you a detailed understanding of your eyes. An OCT scan is quick, simple, and gives us valuable information that we can use to monitor your eye health now and in the future.
