With a heritage beginning in the year 1720, a business know as Woodcock's Consulting Opticians was started which manufactured 'spectacles and eyeglasses of a very high standard'. The Eye Place in Bakewell is a direct descendant of that original business. Woodcock's became known as John Pepper Opticians- run by the great, great, great grandson of the founders. Now trading from the former site of the Royal Oak, Alex Kemp bought this business in 2006 with the purpose of continuing that tradition of supplying 'spectacles and eyeglasses of a very high standard'.

Alex Kemp saved my sight. A chance visit for a new prescription found some retinal damage thanks to his state of the art scanning equipment. Just a few days later my retina tore. Had it not been for Alex's insistence to notice any changes, and come back in immediately if I did, I might have missed the rapidly deteriorating situation. Within 24hrs I was in emergency surgery for a tear. Had I not been lucky enough to go to Alex on that occasion, I could have been experiencing a full retinal detachment. The speed and attention to detail saved my sight. I can't say enough positive things about Alex and Jack. Highly recommended.

This optician is first class. The examinations are amazing, nothing is left to chance. Any queries I have or worries, are always met with politeness and I have always been seen for an appointment even if it wasn't time to go back. I can't thank them enough.
